Spodek Is Back: The Arena That Made Counter-Strike History Hosts ESL Pro League

For more than a decade, one round arena in southern Poland stood for Counter-Strike's biggest winter event. Then IEM left for Kraków. This weekend Spodek hosts the ESL Pro League playoffs, and the arena is back in the spotlight. Here is why it matters.

Some venues stop being buildings and start being part of a sport's memory. For Counter-Strike fans, Spodek in Katowice is one of them.

A Home Game for Poland

The arena's place in the game's history starts with EMS One Katowice 2014, the first Major ever held in Poland. The home team, Virtus.pro, reached the grand final against Ninjas in Pyjamas and won it 2-0, 16-9 on Mirage and 16-10 on Inferno, according to HLTV. A Polish roster lifting a Major trophy in front of a Polish crowd gave the venue a story it has never lost.

Fnatic, and a Decade of Winners

The next year, ESL One Katowice 2015 took place at Spodek too. Fnatic beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 2-1 in the final, then went on to win ESL One Cologne 2015, becoming the first organization to win back-to-back Majors. In 2019, Spodek hosted the IEM Katowice Major, held from February 13 to March 3 and ESL's first Major since 2016.

Over the years the event built its own rituals. According to one report, players walk to the stage down stairs engraved with the names of past champions, a tradition ESL planned to carry over to its new home. Treat that detail as a single source claim, but it captures how much the place meant to the community.

Why IEM Left

In May 2025, ESL announced that IEM would move to Kraków in 2026. IEM had been in Katowice since 2013, and its championship event since 2014. ESL's Michal "Carmac" Blicharz told a Polish outlet that Spodek had become too small, with tickets selling out in about a dozen minutes. Spodek seats roughly 11,000 to 11,500 people. Tauron Arena in Kraków is bigger, with ESL-aligned sources citing about 15,000 seats, though some outlets give larger numbers. Kraków is about 84 kilometers from Katowice, close to ESL's regional office and studio, and the city agreed to a multi-year deal. HLTV also reported that PGL's planned return to Tauron in 2027 lost its booking because of an overlapping event, which turned out to be ESL's.

The last IEM Katowice took place in February 2025. Vitality beat Spirit 3-0 in the final. IEM Kraków followed from January 27 to February 8, 2026, with playoffs at Tauron Arena, and Vitality won again, beating FURIA 3-1.

The Return

Spodek's absence turned out to be short. ESL announced in August 2025 that ESL Pro League Season 24 would finish in Katowice. The season runs from October 3 to 11, 2026, with sixteen teams, twelve invited through the Valve Regional Standings and four from ESL Challenger League. The top eight advance to the playoffs, which run at Spodek from October 9 to 11. The third-place decider is a best-of-three, and the Grand Final is a best-of-five, with $1,000,000 in total prizes.

It is also a milestone for the league. ESL says this is Pro League's first arena playoffs since Odense in 2019. The city of Katowice is using the occasion to hold the fourth Esports School League final during the event, the first time that final has run alongside EPL. What It Says About the Venue

When the finals were announced, Katowice's mayor, Marcin Krupa, called Spodek the city's "temple" of esports, and ESL has not walked away from the building. The company keeps a regional office and studio nearby, and EPL events have been part of past Grand Slam races. NAVI and FaZe both completed theirs at an EPL final.

What changed is scale. IEM needed a bigger stage and moved. EPL, with its smaller footprint, still fits the arena that taught the game's fans to expect a roaring crowd.
