The Strangest Lines in CS2's Patch Notes, 2023 to 2026, and What They Fixed

The Strangest Lines in CS2's Patch Notes, 2023 to 2026, and What They Fixed

Counter-Strike patch notes are usually dry. A few lines, a few fixes, and a date. Read enough of them, though, and some lines stand out for how strange they sound out of context.

Every entry below comes from Valve's own notes or from outlets quoting them. For each, there is a short explanation of what the line most likely means. Where I am reading between the lines, I say so.

Chickens Learn to Walk Uphill (May 23, 2024)

The May 23, 2024 notes said that chickens have a few new animations, that they can now walk up hills, and that they can now turn right while walking. Until then, they apparently could not. It is polish on a creature that mostly wanders around maps, and a reminder that even background details get attention.

Refunding a Grenade You Already Threw (December 22, 2023)

In December 2023, Valve fixed a case where players could refund a grenade for a brief moment after throwing it. That is a real exploit hiding behind a funny image: you throw the grenade, and your money comes back too.

Weapons and the Bomb Falling Through the Ground (December 19, 2023)

Also in December 2023, Valve fixed cases where weapons and the C4 could fall through the ground. For a game built around dropping weapons and planting a bomb, losing either to the floor is a serious problem, even if the sentence reads like physics trivia.

The Speculative Fix (July 30, 2025)

The July 30, 2025 notes included a speculative fix for a rare case where the dropped bomb appears in the wrong location. The word speculative is the interesting part. It suggests Valve could not reliably reproduce the bug and shipped a change it hoped would help, though that is my reading.

The same notes included a second speculative fix, for holstered weapons appearing attached to the deployed weapon.

When the Wrong Music Kit Played (July 30, 2025)

The same day, Valve fixed a bug where the CS2 music kit was replaced by the CS:GO music kit. It is easy to laugh, and also easy to understand. A match plays music at the menu, the round start, and the MVP screen, and hearing the wrong set is immediately noticeable.

Molotov, Again (August 1, 2025)

A short line said the Molotov again uses the correct fire particle. The word again does the work: the correct particle had been replaced at some point, and now it was back. It is a small regression fix with an unusually honest phrasing.

Chickens and the Zeus x27 (September 22, 2026)

The Rush Hour notes included a line saying chickens now take damage from the Zeus x27. It reads like a joke, but it also fills a gap. A weapon built to kill in one shot apparently had been unable to hurt a chicken, which would be a strange hole in the rules of a game with chickens in it.

The same update also said that blood is now much more bloody and that bullet impacts are far more impacty. We covered what that change does and does not fix in a separate article.

Eggs Rest in Nests (late September 2026)

In a late September update, Valve noted that the eggs of background players in main menu lobbies now rest in nests. It is purely cosmetic. The menu shows your lobby, and apparently an egg floating without a nest looked wrong enough to fix.

Black Water on AMD Cards (October 28, 2026)

The October 28 notes included a fix for a bug where liquid could render as black on AMD video cards. It is a rendering problem, not a joke, but out of context it reads like something from a horror game.

What the Lines Show

This is interpretation, not a statement from Valve. Three things come through.

Valve writes plainly. There is little spin in these notes, and a few lines are even self-deprecating, such as the Molotov fix.

Small bugs get fixed even when they are tiny. A chicken, an egg, or a fire particle all got attention.

And some of the oddest lines point to real competitive problems, like the grenade refund and the falling bomb. A funny sentence can hide something that could change a round.
