The Other Counter-Strike: The 12-Year Story of the Spin-off That Just Shut Down

The Other Counter-Strike: The 12-Year Story of the Spin-off That Just Shut Down

For most people, Counter-Strike is one game with a long list of versions. But there has always been a quieter branch of the franchise, built by other hands and aimed at other audiences. One of its longest-running chapters just ended.

Counter-Strike Online

The branch starts in Asia. Counter-Strike Online launched in 2008 as a free-to-play spin-off in much of eastern Asia, created by the Korean publisher Nexon. In 2012, Nexon and Valve announced a sequel aimed at Asian markets, and Counter-Strike Online 2 followed in 2013, developed by Nexon on the Source engine. These games kept the core idea but added their own modes, weapons, and content.

Zombies Come to Steam

In August 2014, Nexon announced a version for the West. Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, a free-to-play, zombie-themed spin-off, went into open beta on Steam on September 23, 2014, and released on October 7. It was developed and published by Nexon with oversight from Valve.

It played nothing like the competitive game. The spin-off had its own maps, modes, and weapons, and character skins that leaned toward fantasy, according to Hotspawn. Its content was similar to Counter-Strike Online, but it was the version Western players could download.

Spreading Across Regions

The game launched in Europe, the CIS region, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Turkey received it on April 1, 2015, after the closure of Counter-Strike Online Turkey. South America and the Middle East and North Africa followed on June 24, 2015.

Studio and the Final Name

The game changed identity twice. In 2019 it became Counter-Strike Nexon: Studio, adding a level editor for building custom multiplayer maps with limited assets. In August 2024 it became simply Counter-Strike Nexon.

The End

On June 24, 2026, Nexon announced the end of service. Sales of paid items and downloadable content stopped immediately, though existing in-game currency stayed usable until the servers closed. Nexon later confirmed the closing time as 04:00 CEST on September 30, 2026, a week short of 12 years after its Steam release. Sources differ by a few days on exactly when the final date was confirmed, with reports pointing to the first week of July.

The notice covers Counter-Strike Nexon only. It describes the game service and its official community operations ending completely, with no further updates. Hotspawn framed it as another loss for the series after CS:GO gave way to CS2.

What It Means

Valve's main game is not affected, and CS2 remains one of the most played games on Steam. But the shutdown is a small reminder that the Counter-Strike story is bigger than any one version. For players in the regions where it was available, including Turkey and the CIS countries, a piece of their gaming history is now gone from Steam.

That is also what makes it worth telling. Franchises are usually remembered by their biggest games. The quieter branches, the ones that ran for years without much fanfare, are part of the picture too.
