CS2's New Grenade Purchase Limit Explained: Why You Can't Rebuy a Flash

Valve's September 22 update was famous for the Rush mode and silent reloads. One short line near the bottom got much less attention, until players started noticing something odd in the buy menu.

The Old Rules

The carry limits for grenades are well established. A player can carry four grenades in total, with at most two flashbangs and one of every other type. In Casual, you can hold only one flashbang. Grenades have also been droppable like weapons since September 2021.

That last detail mattered, because it let players trade utility with teammates.

What Valve Changed

Valve's note says the ammo_grenade_limit_total setting now also enforces the total number of grenades a player is allowed to purchase in a round. That is the whole explanation. Valve did not add examples or say why.

What Players Noticed

The meaning came from players testing it. A widely shared post on September 23 said you can only buy four grenades in total during a round, and that previously a player could buy a full utility pack and drop an extra flash. An HLTV commenter described a related effect: if you buy four grenades and throw one, such as an insta-smoke, you cannot buy a flashbang afterwards. Another commenter called the change a huge meta shift that most coverage missed.

These are community reports, not Valve's description. The reaction was mixed, and some posts complained that the change hurts teams that rely on heavy utility use.

Why It Matters

This is analysis, but the practical effect is straightforward. Before, throwing a grenade opened a slot, and a player with money could buy another. If the limit is counted on purchases, throwing no longer frees you to rebuy. Each player has a fixed budget of grenade purchases per round, and the buy has to be planned.

It also changes the old habit of buying extra flashes to drop to a teammate. If the cap applies to everything you purchase, that stops being a way to give the team more utility than the carry limit allows.

Insta-Smokes and the Freeze-Time Crosshair

An insta-smoke is a smoke thrown at the very start of a round to block a passage before the opposing team arrives. On September 30, Valve enabled grenade crosshairs during freeze time, with a short explanation: hold any grenade attack button, and the grenade crosshair appears. Valve says this is meant for insta-smokes.

Before that, according to Skin Club, you could not bring up the grenade crosshair until freeze time ended. The change makes it easier to line up a throw before the round begins.

The two updates pull in slightly different directions. One makes utility planning stricter, and the other makes a common utility play easier to set up.

How to Adapt

This section is advice, not a rule. Decide your four grenades before you buy, since throwing one will not give you room for another. Teams that used drops to share flashes will need to plan who buys what in advance.

For practice, guides for training servers raise the ammo_grenade_limit_total console variable, one example sets it to 5, so you can carry more while you rehearse lineups.

What We Do Not Know

Several things are unclear. Valve has not said whether the purchase cap was intended as a major balance change or a side effect of the setting. It has not publicly revised the rule since, as far as I can tell. And I have no verified data on how professional teams adapted, so any claim about its effect on the pro scene would be a guess.
