The Two Biggest Matches in Counter-Strike History Both Featured NiKo: The Numbers Behind Cologne 2026's Viewership Record

Records in esports usually fall by wide margins. This one fell by about as little as a record can. And the two matches at the top of the list share a player.

The Record

According to Esports Charts, the grand final of IEM Cologne Major 2026, where Falcons beat FURIA 3-0, peaked at 2,751,121 concurrent viewers. That made it the most-watched Counter-Strike match in history. The previous record belonged to the PGL Major Stockholm 2021 grand final between Natus Vincere and G2, at 2,748,434.

The gap is roughly 2,700 viewers. Early reports put Cologne's peak at 2,750,036, which would have been a margin of only about 1,600, and Esports Charts noted at the time that the number was still being revised upward. Treat every figure here as approximate, since trackers update their data.

Beyond the Peak

The peak is only one of three headline metrics, and Cologne led the other two as well. The tournament averaged 627,863 viewers and became the first Counter-Strike event to pass 100 million hours watched, finishing at about 100.3 million. The previous record was around 76.1 million, set by the Austin Major in 2025. Esports Charts' own ranking page lists the total as slightly lower, about 100.2 million, which is the kind of small difference worth expecting between reports.

It was also ESL's most-watched Counter-Strike event ever, passing the company's earlier record from the IEM Rio Major in 2022.

The Top Ten

Esports Charts ranks Counter-Strike events by hours watched, and the top ten is made up entirely of Majors:

  1. IEM Cologne Major 2026, about 100.2 million
  2. BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025, about 76.1 million
  3. StarLadder Budapest Major 2025, about 71.3 million
  4. PGL Major Stockholm 2021, about 71.3 million
  5. IEM Rio Major 2022, about 69.5 million
  6. PGL Major Antwerp 2022, about 68.1 million
  7. FACEIT Major London 2018, about 61.0 million
  8. BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023, about 58.9 million
  9. PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, about 58.3 million
  10. IEM Katowice Major 2019, about 52.4 million

The top three belong to the three most recent Majors, which suggests steady growth, not a single spike. By peak viewers, the top five are Cologne 2026, Stockholm 2021, Antwerp 2022, Copenhagen 2024, and Austin 2025.

The NiKo Thread

The two most-watched matches ever were both grand finals involving NiKo. Hotspawn pointed out that viewers tuned in to both to see whether he would finally lift a Major trophy. In Stockholm 2021, NiKo played for G2 and lost to NAVI. In Cologne 2026, he played for Falcons and won, taking his first Major title.

It is a neat coincidence, though it should be read as one factor among several. Cologne carries its own weight as the Cathedral of Counter-Strike, and Majors have been drawing larger audiences for years. Still, a star chasing a title he had missed for so long clearly helped the story travel.

The CS2 Context

Cologne also reset the record for the CS2 era. The previous CS2 peak belonged to the Copenhagen 2024 grand final between NAVI and FaZe, at 1.85 million. During the Cologne quarterfinal between Spirit and G2, the event passed 2.04 million viewers, which broke that record well before the final arrived.

What the Numbers Do and Do Not Say

Esports Charts figures are useful for comparing events within one tracker, but they are measurements, not a census. Peak viewers capture a single moment, average viewers show sustained interest, and hours watched reward long events. Each tells a different story, and Cologne won on all three.

What the numbers cannot tell you is how much of the growth belongs to the game, how much to the event, and how much to a particular storyline. Whether the Singapore Major can reach similar totals is an open question, and the data will answer it in December.
