Counter-Strike's weapon list feels settled. Most players could name the whole roster from memory. The leaked LAR makes a fair question worth answering: how often has Valve added a new gun, and when was the last time?
The Launch Roster
CS:GO reached its full release on August 21, 2012, after a beta that began on November 30, 2011. Several weapons that feel like part of the game's identity were already in that beta, including the PP-Bizon, the MP7, the SSG 08, the SCAR-20, and the Zeus x27.
According to the Counter-Strike Wiki, most Counter-Strike games shared a roster of 25 weapons, and CS:GO added 19 more. Ten of those replaced older guns, which leaves a net of nine new weapons. Treat that count as the wiki's own tally, since sources count variants differently.
The Additions, in Order
After release, Valve added five weapons across four updates.
August 13, 2013. The Arms Deal update added the USP-S and the M4A1-S. Both are suppressed versions of existing Counter-Terrorist guns, and the wiki says they came in response to community requests. The USP-S carries a detachable suppressor and holds half the magazine of the P2000.
February 12, 2014. The CZ75-Auto arrived as a fully automatic pistol with very little reserve ammunition.
December 11, 2015. The R8 Revolver followed. It trades ammunition count and fire rate for harder-hitting shots, and its secondary fire fans the hammer, giving up accuracy for speed.
August 15, 2018. The MP5-SD was the last. It is a suppressed alternative to the MP7 that gives up some damage.
The Pattern
Look at the five together, and a pattern appears. None of them is a new slot in the buy menu. Each is an alternative that you choose in your loadout, in place of an existing weapon, according to the Counter-Strike wikis. The CZ75-Auto replaces the Tec-9 or the Five-SeveN, the R8 replaces the Desert Eagle, and the MP5-SD replaces the MP7. The USP-S and the M4A1-S replace the P2000 and the M4A4 for Counter-Terrorists.
That fits how Valve handled the changes. New guns arrived as options that shared a slot, not as additions that expanded the buy menu.
The Eight-Year Gap
After August 2018, no new weapon appeared. As far as I can tell, CS2 launched in September 2023 with the existing roster, and the changes Valve has made since have been to the guns themselves. In 2026 alone, it buffed the MP7 and MP5-SD in January, reworked reloading in March, and cut the AUG's reload time in October.
By November 2026, that is a gap of more than eight years, which is longer than the entire run from the Arms Deal to the MP5-SD.
Where the LAR Fits
This is where the leak matters. The weapon first appeared in the files as the M14 in September, and on October 28 it returned as the LAR with a model, textures, an icon, and animations. Dataminers describe a lever-action rifle that loads one round at a time, and the files sit in a folder named do_not_ship. Valve has announced nothing.
The early stats were close to the AWP's: 115 base damage, a five-round magazine, and a $100 kill reward, with a price of $4,100. As we noted in our LAR article, those may be placeholders.
What It Would Break
This is analysis, not something Valve has said. If the LAR followed the old pattern, it would be a loadout alternative. The leaked numbers resemble a sniper rifle's, which suggests it might sit near the AWP, but that is a guess. It could also be something new.
Either way, it would be unusual. It would end the longest gap in the game's weapon history. And as far as I can tell, a rifle that loads one round at a time would be new, since shotguns such as the XM1014 already work that way.
What We Do Not Know
We do not know whether the LAR will ship, which slot it would take, or what its final stats would be. The do_not_ship folder means it may remain an experiment. Valve has not commented on the files.
